Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees, usually fallen sticks or twigs, most often on Fagus but also known on Acer pseudoplatanus, Betula pendula, Buddleja davidii, Corylus, Quercus robur and Ulex europaeus.

Notes: Occasional but widespread, and may be locally common in southern England. Microscopically indistinguishable from Junghuhnia nitida from which it differs in its hydnoid basidiome.
