Habitat: On dead wood of deciduous trees in parkland and woodland. Especially common on Betula, Corylus, Fagus, Fraxinus and Salix spp. Also known on Acer campestre, A. pseudoplatanus, Aesculus, Alnus, Castanea, Ilex, Juglans regia, Platanus, Prunus, Quercus, Sambucus nigra, Sorbus aucuparia, Tilia and Ulmus spp. Reports on conifers such as Picea spp. and Taxus are unverified.

Notes: Very common and widespread, but less so northwards and in Scotland.
