Habitat: On soil, usually associated with Quercus spp. in oakwoods or mixed deciduous woodland but also reported with Betula spp. and Fagus.
Notes: Very common and widespread. N.B. The name is illegitimate, being a later homonym of R. atropurpurea Peck [Rep. (Annual) New York State Mus. Nat. Hist. 41: 75 (1888)].
