Habitat: Parasitic then saprotrophic. On old trunks of Malus spp., including cultivars, in gardens and orchards. Reported once on Fagus but this host is unverified.
Notes: Rare but conspicuous on old trunks, forming large, bright yellow, hydnoid basidiomes with a pungent smell said to resemble 'pineapple'. Apparently spread by horticultural processes (pruning etc.) rather than by spore dispersal.
