Habitat: On soil or litter in deciduous and conifer woodland, on sand dunes, on shingle beaches and in grassland.
Notes: Very common, and widespread. Macroscopically very variable especially in regard to colour and many varieties have been described. Forms ranging through dark purplish, lilaceous, reddish, rose-pink, pink, pale sky-blue, yellow, and white are noted, often clustered together and probably produced from the same mycelium. There is even a multicoloured form.
