Habitat: On standing or fallen trunks and large branches. Usually on Fagus but also known from Acer pseudoplatanus, Betula, Fraxinus, Quercus, Salix, Tilia and Ulmus spp. More unusual hosts include Chrysolepis chrysophila, Juglans regia, Laburnum anagyroides, Laurus nobilis, Malus sp., Morus nigra, Prunus amygdaloides and Rhus typhina. Rarely on conifers such as Abies, Araucaria, Cedrus, Picea and Pinus spp.

Notes: Occasional but widespread. Much less frequent than G. australe with which it has been much confused. Basidiomes may be attacked by a dipteran, Agathomyia wankowiczii, the larvae of which induce large nipple-like galls on the pore surface.
