Habitat: Weakly parasitic then saprotrophic. On living and fallen trunks of deciduous trees and shrubs, especially on old coppiced trunks of Corylus and Fagus. Rarely reported on conifers such as Larix and Pinus spp., but unsubstantiated with voucher material and the hosts are unverified.
Notes: Very common and widespread. Records from coniferous hosts are probably misidentified S. sanguinolentum.
