Habitat: On acidic soil in deciduous or conifer woodland, often amongst mosses such as Polytrichum spp. Occasionally with other mosses in old pastures, on heathland and moorland and rarely on lawns.
Notes: Common and widespread. Specimens with a markedly rugose pileal surface have been referred to 'form' rugosoreticulatum but are within the natural variation of the species. Albino forms also occur.
