Habitat: Saprotrophic on deciduous trees, usually on dead wood but occasionally in wounds on living trunks. Often on Quercus spp., but also known on Acer pseudoplatanus, A. palmatum, Alnus, Betula, Fagus, Fraxinus and Sambucus nigra. Reported on conifers but unsubstantiated with voucher material.

Notes: Very common and widespread.
