Habitat: On dead and decayed wood, often stumps, of deciduous trees. Most often reported on Fraxinus and occasionally Fagus and Corylus. Reported on wood of conifers but unsubstantiated with voucher material and the hosts unverified.

Notes: Occasional but widespread. Basidiomes in active growth have a strong scent of anise, lacking in the var. inolens which is otherwise identical.
