Habitat: On soil (usually calcareous) in open mixed deciduous woodland. Also known amongst grass on downland with Betula spp.
Notes: The true distribution and frequency are unknown due to confusion with A. echinocephala and the fact that both species have commonly been reported as A. solitaria (a nomen confusum). Rarely reported but apparently widespread.
