Habitat: Usually on sandy, acidic soil on heathland or moorland. Associated with Pinus spp., and often growing on bare or compacted soil by paths and tracksides near to trees. Also reported amongst Calluna and Ulex europaeus in such habitat. Also rather frequent on old bonfire sites on acid soils. Rarely in deciduous woodland but known with Betula, Castanea, Fagus and Quercus spp.
Notes: Occasional but widespread and may be locally common.
