Habitat: On soil (often on disturbed ground) by the edges of paths in woodland, by roadsides, on lawns, in gardens and occasionally amongst grass in pastures.
Notes: Common and widespread. Agaricus areolatus sensu Cooke 596 (570) Vol. 4 (1886) and 1182 (1177) Vol. 8 (1891) may represent a Hypholoma sp., perhaps H. capnoides fide BFF5: 99.
