Habitat: On decayed wood in woodland or parkland, usually on large stumps or fallen branches of deciduous trees. Most often reported on Betula spp., Fagus and Fraxinus but also known on Acer pseudoplatanus, Aesculus, Populus tremula, Quercus and Salix spp.

Notes: Occasional but widespread. Young basidiomes are often a dark lilac-purplish but lose this with age. When older they may resemble old specimens of Pleurotus ostreatus and be passed over as such. Perhaps better known as Lentinus torulosus.

Distribution: E: o, S: o, W: o, NI: !, ROI: !
