Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees, especially common on Fraxinus and also frequent on Fagus but known on a wide range of other hosts. Rarely reported on coniferous wood but these records are unverified.

Notes: Common and widespread. A form with a scaly pileus is frequently recorded as Crepidotus calolepis or C. mollis var. calolepis.
