Habitat: On dead and dying wood of deciduous trees, most frequently Fagus. Rarely in wound scars on living trunks, or on decayed wood of conifers such as species of Araucaria, Cupressus, Picea, Pinus, Thuja and Taxus.

Notes: Very common and widespread.
