Habitat: On dead wood of conifers, usually large. Dubiously reported on deciduous wood (Fagus, Fraxinus, Quercus spp., Hedera and Sambucus nigra).

Notes: Very common and widespread. The var. cavarae is simply an unpigmented (albino) form, not otherwise distinct.
