Habitat: On soil in deciduous woodland. Usually associated with Fagus but not uncommonly with Betula, Corylus and Quercus spp.

Notes: Very common and widespread. The epithet 'amethystea' is considered incorrect following Mueller & Vellinga in Mycotaxon 37: 385 (1990).
