Habitat: On soil, usually calcareous loam, in mixed deciduous woodland, usually with Fagus or Corylus and often under dense cover of Mercurialis perennis. Also known with conifers (especially in old plantations of Picea spp.) and with Urtica dioica in nettlebeds.

Notes: Common in England, especially from the midlands southwards. Occasional elsewhere but widespread.
