Habitat: On acidic soil, amongst needle litter or less often on decayed wood, in conifer woodland. Rarely in deciduous woodland on calcareous soil, with Sambucus nigra.

Notes: Very common and widespread. The varieties are mainly colour forms. Var. pallida has pale yellowish lamellae, var. lactea is entirely white, and var. nigripes is characterised by the presence of minute blackish scales on the pileus.
