Habitat: Weakly parasitic then saprotrophic. On living, fallen and decayed wood of both deciduous and coniferous trees.

Notes: Very common, widespread and morphologically variable. Var. columbinus is distinguished by young basidiomes being peacock-blue and occuring on Salix spp., but this falls within the normal variation of the species. Sensu Cooke 279 (195) Vol. 2.
