Habitat: On acidic soil, usually associated with Quercus spp., in mixed deciduous woodland, and also reported with Pseudotsuga menziesii in plantation.
Notes: British collections from South Hampshire (New Forest, Millyford Bridge in 1998) and West Sussex (near Cocking in 2004). Sensu NCL and Rayner (1985) is Russula anthracina.
