Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees, often in large caespitose clusters on large fallen trunks and stumps. Most frequently on Betula, Fagus, Fraxinus and Ulmus spp. but also known on Acer pseudoplatanus, Aesculus, Alnus spp., Castanea, Corylus, Crataegus spp., Carpinus, Prunus laurocerasus, Salix spp., Sambucus nigra, Sorbus aucuparia, and Tilia spp. Reported on conifers such as Larix, Picea, Pinus and Thuja spp. but these hosts are unverified.

Notes: Very common and widespread.
