Habitat: On decayed wood and occasionally on living roots of deciduous trees. Sometimes reported 'on soil' or 'amongst grass', but then growing from buried wood.

Notes: Common and widespread. It should be noted that B&K4: 332 & pl. 425 (1995), as Pholiota graminis, is actually P. gummosa.
