Habitat: On acidic soil, associated with Pinus sylvestris and frequently growing amongst Calluna on heathland and less frequently in woodland.
Notes: Common and widespread. Suillus lactifluus, considered distinct by some authorities, is reported from two sites in England but unsubstantiated with voucher material.
