Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees or conifers. Most often reported on large fallen trunks, logs or stumps of Fagus but known on a wide range of other hosts.

Notes: Very common and widespread. The illustration in B&K2 [pl. 238] lacks the typical fleshy appearance of C. puteana and appears to depict C. arida. The cause of 'Wet Rot' in damp cellars or outhouses.
