Habitat: Saprotrophic or perhaps weakly parasitic. On wood of deciduous trees and shrubs, commonly Sambucus nigra but also on Acer campestre, A. palmatum, A. pseudoplatanus, Berberis spp., Buddleja davidii, Clematis vitalba, Cornus sanguinea, Eleagnus spp., Euonymus europaeus, Fagus, Fraxinus, Hedera, Juglans regia, Ilex, Laburnum anagyroides, Platanus spp., Prunus laurocerasus, P. spinosa, Salix and Ulmus spp. Rarely on conifers such as Picea spp.
Notes: Very common and widespread. The var. lactea is an unpigmented form, not otherwise distinct.
