Habitat: On fallen branches of deciduous trees in old woodland, usually Corylus and Fagus and less often Fraxinus. Also on Betula, Buxus, Quercus, Salix, Tilia spp., and Ulex europaeus and known from a single collection on Rosa sp.
Notes: Occasional but may be locally common in England. Rarely reported elsewhere but apparently widespread. Basidiomes are said to arise from a large sclerotium but this is usually not found. Small specimens on thin branches were previously called Polyporus lentus but are merely depauperate forms.
