Cortinarius purpurascens (Fr.) Fr., Epicr. syst. mycol. (Uppsala): 265 (1838)

Agaricus purpurascens Fr., Observ. mycol. (Leipzig) 2: 70 (1818)

Habitat: On soil, usually associated with Fagus and less often Quercus spp., in mixed deciduous woodland.

Notes: Occasional but widespread. Reported from Republic of Ireland (South Kerry) in 1936 and Northern Ireland (Down) in 1948 but unsubstantiated with voucher material.
