Habitat: Parasitic then saprotrophic. Once common on large trunks or stumps of Ulmus spp., especially during the epidemic of Dutch elm disease, but now declining on that host. Frequent on Aesculus in parkland, and also known on Acer negundo, A. pseudoplatanus, Fagus, Fraxinus, Platanus, Populus nigra, P. canescens, Robinia pseudoacacia, Sambucus nigra, S. racemosa and Tilia spp. Also collected from old sewage or drainage pipes in London (made from hollowed-out elm trunks).
Notes: Occasional but widespread in England, perhaps now decreasing. Most often reported from southern areas but known as far north as Derbyshire and Yorkshire. Two collections from Wales (Flintshire and Glamorganshire) and one from the Channel Islands (Guernsey).
