Habitat: On fallen, decayed wood of deciduous trees, especially common on large fallen trunks or stumps of Acer pseudoplatanus and Fagus in woodland, and not infrequent on Aesculus in parkland in southern England. Uncommon on Betula spp., Castanea, Corylus, Populus spp., Prunus avium, Rhamnus, Rosa, Salix, Tilia and Ulmus spp., and rare on conifers such as Larix and Pinus spp.

Notes: Very common and widespread. The form tenuis was a name given to thin basidiomes formed on a depauperate substratum, such as small sticks or twigs.
