Habitat: On soil (usually calcareous loam) in deciduous woodland. Usually associated with Corylus but also known with Fagus and Quercus spp. Rarely with conifers such as Pseudotsuga in mixed woodland.
Notes: Occasional but widespread. Most often recorded from southern England. N.B. The material illustrated in Phillips (p. 149) has been re-examined and is not this species. It appears to be near or equal to Inocybe maculata.
