Hygrophorus erubescens (Fr.) Fr., Epicr. syst. mycol. (Uppsala): 322 (1838) [1836-1838]

Agaricus erubescens Fr., Syst. mycol. (Lundae) 1: 32 (1821)

Habitat: On calcareous soil, associated with Picea spp. in continental Europe. British collections lack habitat details but Cooke 876 (888) Vol. 6 (1888) is labelled 'in fir woods'.

Notes: Historic collections at K from two sites in Herefordshire (Downton Park) and Northamptonshire (King’s Cliffe). The last of these (Downton) was made in 1880 and since this species forms such large and distinctive fruit bodies it is now regarded as extinct in Britain.
