Habitat: On soil, often amongst grass at the edges of woodland or scrub, associated with a wide variety of deciduous trees and shrubs, and with conifers. Also on heathland, at the edges of paths, and rather frequently on roadside verges. A spring species, fruiting mainly from early April to late June, but also recorded as early as February and as late as November.

Notes: Common and widespread at least throughout England, and probably elsewhere.
