Habitat: Usually on decayed wood or bark of conifers. Uncommon on deciduous trees and shrubs but known on Acer pseudoplatanus, Buxus, Fagus, Fraxinus, Hedera, Populus, Quercus and Salix spp.

Notes: Common and widespread on wood of conifers. Coniophora arida var. suffocata, with densely encrusted basal hyphae, is kept separate by some authorities.
