Habitat: On base poor mud or 'black soil' around the edges of woodland pools, especially when partially dried out. Also known from marshes.
Notes: Occasional but apparently widespread. Specimens with pronounced marginal veil fragments have been called Psilocybe verrucosum (fide Watling in BFF5, but the combination in Psilocybe has not been traced) but fall within the variation of the species.
