Habitat: On soil, often in grassland (pastures or fields), along woodland edges and roadsides, and rather frequently on compost heaps or piles of decayed grass clippings.

Notes: Occasional but widespread and may be locally abundant. Basidiomes are macroscopically variable, especially with regard to colour, and several varieties have been described.
