Habitat: On soil in woodland, often with Corylus or Fagus but known with a wide range of other deciduous species. Less frequently reported with conifers such as Pinus, Thuja spp. and Taxus.

Notes: Occasional but widespread and may occur in swarms. Especially frequent on calcareous loam soils in southern England, much less so elsewhere and only a single collection from Scotland.
