Habitat: On soil in deciduous woodland, often in wet areas amongst Sphagnum spp., and usually associated with Betula spp.
Notes: Occasional to rather rare, but widespread. A reddening variant (L. holopus var. americanum) has been reported from England (South Devon: Culm Davy Woods) in 1995. A greenish form has been referred to L. aerugineum, but this taxon is based on an old and doubtful name.
