Habitat: On 'black' soil or humus (often calcareous) in open, mixed deciduous woodland, usually associated with Corylus and Fagus or Quercus spp.
Notes: Occasional but widespread in England. Last reported from Scotland (Easterness: Rothiemurchus) in 1938 and the Republic of Ireland Wicklow) in 1957.
