Habitat: On acidic soil, in wet areas on moorland or heathland, usually associated with Betula spp., and often growing amongst Calluna, Juncus, Molinia caerulea and Sphagnum spp.

Notes: Common and widespread. Restricted to areas of acidic soil. For some authorities L. proximella is a distinct alpine species, recorded from several montane sites in Scotland.
