Habitat: On fallen wood of deciduous trees, usually Fagus but also known on Acer pseudoplatanus, Alnus, Ilex, Prunus avium, Quercus and Tilia spp. Increasingly frequent on bales of hay, especially those wrapped in black plastic sheeting. Rarely on worked wood such as fence posts. Recorded also from a variety of animal substrata (e.g. whalebone, horn, leather) and as a cause of human mouth ulcers and toe nail infections.

Notes: Locally common in south eastern England, occasional to rare elsewhere. Cosmopolitan.
