Habitat: On soil, typically with deciduous trees, usually Fagus and rarely Betula spp. Also reported from dunes with Pinus spp. and in greenhouses on potting compost.
Notes: This is a large and distinctive species, most often collected in south-eastern England where it may occasionally be abundant in beechwoods on calcareous soil. N.B. This is not H. petaloides of NCL or BFF8, for which see H. auriscalpium.
