Habitat: On living trunks of Betula spp. Very rarely reported on Alnus, Malus and Platanus spp. but these hosts are unverified.

Notes: Common in Scotland, rare in England. Produces large, sterile, rock-hard, black ‘conks’ on the trunks of infected trees. Basidiomes are formed under peeling bark or in cracks on the surface of the conks, but are rarely encountered, being rapidly destroyed by insects or decay.
