Habitat: Weakly parasitic then saprotrophic on roots of deciduous trees, usually Quercus spp., but also reported on Castanea, Corylus, Fagus, Fraxinus, Ilex, Rhododendron ponticum, Sorbu, Pyrus and Ulmus spp. A single collection in herb. K on roots of Cedrus sp.

Notes: Occasional but widespread, but with a distinctly southern distribution in England. Rarely reported elsewhere. The large compound basidiomes, formed at the base of trees or stumps, often smell strongly of 'mouse urine' and are fancifully said to resemble a.
