Habitat: On decayed wood of deciduous trees in old woodland, often large, fallen and very decayed trunks or stumps of Fagus and Ulmus spp. Also known on Acer pseudoplatanus, Betula, Fraxinus, Populus and Quercus spp.
Notes: Occasional in southern England, and for a time common on large fallen trunks and stumps of Ulmus spp., in the aftermath of Dutch elm disease. Rarely reported elsewhere, but widespread.
