Habitat: On decayed wood, often large stumps, of deciduous trees in woodland, often on acidic soil. Sometimes appearing as if terrestrial but then on buried wood. Associated with Betula, Castanea, Fagus, Ilex and Quercus spp.

Notes: Known from England (Cumberland, East & West Kent, East Norfolk, East & West Sussex, Hertfordshire, North Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, South Hampshire, Surrey, Westmorland and Yorkshire) and Wales (Breconshire). Reported from Scotland. A distinctive species, growing in large clumps, with densely scaly-fibrillar pileus and bright yellow mycelium at the stipe bases, difficult to overlook and probably genuinely rare.
