Habitat: On decayed wood, usually of deciduous trees and preferentially on or around large old stumps of Quercus spp. Rarely on wood of conifers but known on Picea and Pseudotsuga spp. Also reported 'on soil' or 'in grassland', but then probably arising from dead tree roots.

Notes: Occasional but widespread. Easily recognised by the bright brick-red (laterite) pilei. Several forms, characterised by the size or amount of veil fragments on the pileus, were at one time recognised but have no taxonomic status. Better known as H. sublateritium.

Distribution: E: o, S: o, W: o, NI: o, ROI: !, Other: Channel Islands: !
