Fomes fomentarius (L.) J.J. Kickx, Summa veg. Scand. Section Post. (Stockholm): 321 (1849)

Polyporus fomentarius (L.) Fr., Syst. mycol. (Lundae) 1: 374 (1821)

Habitat: Parasitic then saprotrophic on deciduous trees. Most frequent on Betula spp., but also known on Acer pseudoplatanus, Aesculus, Fagus, Quercus robur and Populus nigra. Reported on other deciduous hosts and on conifers such as Picea and Pinus spp., but these are not verified.

Notes: Common in Scotland and now increasingly collected in England (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cumberland, Lincolnshire, Middlesex, North & South Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, Surrey, West Kent and Yorkshire). A single collection from the Republic of Ireland (Leitrim). Reported from Wales in 1910 but unsubstantiated with voucher material. Records from Salix spp., are suspect, mostly proving to be misidentified Phellinus igniarius.
