Habitat: On acidic or sandy soil, usually associated with Pinus sylvestris but also reported with Picea spp., in woodland and plantations, often growing amongst Calluna and Vaccinium myrtillus.

Notes: Occasional in Scotland. Rarely reported elsewhere but apparently widespread. Better known as C. speciosissimus. An extremely toxic species.
